The app

Stepwise runs entirely on your Mac. Recordings, screenshots and guides are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Stepwise. Files only go elsewhere when you send them: a PDF you export is saved where you choose, and sharing a PDF writes a temporary copy that macOS clears later. The app has no account system, no cloud sync and no analytics. It makes two kinds of network request. First, once a day it asks this website for a small update file (the update feed) and sends the app version, which appears in our hosting provider’s server log with your IP address; you can switch this off in Settings. Second, if you activate Pro, it sends your license key and a random install ID to Polar, our payment partner, to check the key. Nothing you record, no screenshots and no guide content is ever sent.

It asks macOS for two permissions: Screen Recording, to capture the video and screenshots, and Accessibility, to read the names of buttons and menus so it can write captions. You can revoke either in System Settings at any time.

The recording and the screenshots show whatever is on your screen, including notifications and anything private that appears while you record. Review a guide and its video before you share them.

This website

This site sets no cookies, runs no scripts and loads nothing from third parties. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and requested page) for security and reliability.

Buying Stepwise

Payments are handled by our payment partner, which acts as the seller of record. They collect the details needed to take payment and issue your license, such as your name, email address and billing country. We do not see your card number.
